Pine Plains Farmhouse

Pine Plains, NY

Set within 33 acres of farmland and wetlands in historic Pine Plains, this contemporary farmhouse serves as a family retreat that honors the site’s agrarian past. Carefully aligned with one of three original barns, the home forms a defined entry court while opening at the rear to sweeping fields and a winding stream. Its T-shaped plan, organized on a 15-foot structural module, creates generous, light-filled communal areas on the ground floor, and series of bedrooms on the upper floor, each oriented to capture panoramic views. The primary suite occupies a privileged vantage point over the barns and rolling farmland, reinforcing the dialogue between the new residence and its historic surroundings.

A restrained palette of stone, oak, and tile provides a modern yet rustic interior backdrop for the family’s eclectic art and furnishings, while the exterior’s white board-and-batten siding echoes regional farmhouse vernacular. A wraparound porch encourages outdoor living, and a bluestone pool set into the slope reflects both the house and the pastoral landscape. Together, these architectural elements create a home that continues the site’s long story—bridging rural traditions with contemporary living.

The rear porch offers a covered space for outdoor dining and entertaining overlooking the pool. The pool sits just beyond an existing stone wall, bridging the connection between the domestic house and the wilderness beyond.  This layered transition from interior to exterior environment was of primary importance.

The main staircase is split into two runs of steps each defined by a simple wooden guardrail.  The spindles supporting the wooden handrail are slightly tapered in keeping with the traditional yet minimal design of the interiors.  Both the stair treads and railings are made from solid oak, relating to the oak wood flooring throughout.
