Oakley Courtyard House

Accord, NY

The second of two case study projects — this house is setback from the main road, nestled in a dense forest secluded from the neighboring properties.  The winding approach to the house leads to an entry courtyard which provides a private outdoor sanctuary for both the main house and adjacent ADU.  The living and dining area is flanked by two window walls, one opening towards the courtyard while the other leading to a large sun deck facing the woodlands beyond.  A double-sided fireplace hearth defines both this great room as well as a screened porch with panoramic views of the property.   The large windows & openings throughout the house blur the barrier between inside and outside.

In collaboration with D&A Companies.

The courtyard defines the main entry to the house, which also encircles an existing stone boulder on the site.  The warm stucco walls along with crushed gravel court contrast the wilderness beyond, creating a tranquil space that’s an extension of the interior.
