Mount Airy Residence

Croton-on-Hudson, NY

This project renovates and expands an early 20th-century stone house in Mount Airy, Croton-on-Hudson, with a design approach grounded in respect for the original architecture while introducing contemporary interventions. The original stone structure was preserved and extended using locally sourced flagstone to reinforce the base of the house, while white lap siding on the upper levels brings a lighter, modern expression that remains contextually aligned. A former 1980s addition was reimagined with a new upper story defined by a steeply pitched roof and dormers, which visually unifies the house under a cohesive roofline while also reconnecting it to a traditional residential vernacular.

Interior spaces unfold through a carefully choreographed sequence that emphasizes material continuity, curvature, and connection to the landscape. Entry at the lower level leads to a sculptural stairway that anchors circulation and frames views of the surrounding stone outcroppings. The main level integrates the kitchen, great room, and primary suite through soft transitions and arched elements, while restored historic details, like exposed rafters and fireplaces, are paired with refined contemporary finishes. Outdoor terraces and patios extend living spaces into the site, and a restrained palette of natural materials and custom elements reinforces a timeless, unified architectural vision that bridges past and present.

The series of large windows facing the gardens and pond beyond brings light deep into the great room, which includes spaces for entertaining, dining and relaxation — including a long banquette framed by an arched portal.

Exposed beams in the primary suite reveal the structure of the original stone house, while new elements, such as a soapstone fireplace in the bedroom and marble tiling in the bath, express the contemporary aesthetic of the new owners.

The lower level serves as the main entry to the house, where a large foyer & mudroom are layered with board and batten paneling and a limestone floor that serves as a backdrop for furniture & fixtures like a custom soapstone farmhouse sink.
