Hudson Bluff House
Saugerties, NYPerched above the confluence of the Esopus Creek and the Hudson, this residence is designed to capture the expansive eastern views while maintaining a strong presence toward the street. The home was shaped through close collaboration with its owner—a private chef seeking a place for gathering, creativity, and connection. The architecture is organized around three primary elements: a wrap-around deck that extends living space into the landscape, a stucco-clad main level anchoring the main public rooms, and a pitched-roof upper volume housing the private quarters. Referencing the steep gabled forms of neighboring historic homes, the roof reinterprets the local vernacular in a distinctly contemporary way.
Material and spatial restraint define both exterior and interior. Off-white stucco grounds the home, while natural vertical pine siding and a dark bronze standing-seam metal roof emphasize the sculptural upper volume. Inside, a light-filled living space opens to the river beyond, anchored by a wood stove and flowing into a kitchen conceived as both culinary workspace and social center. Upstairs, bedrooms offer varying degrees of retreat, including a primary suite oriented toward the landscape with a spa-like bath and private deck. Throughout, a cohesive palette of white oak, plaster, concrete, and marble creates calm continuity, while the client’s careful curation of furnishings reinforces the home’s balance of minimal luxury and everyday livability.
