Clinton Hill Brownstone

Brooklyn, NY

For this late 19th century Italianate brownstone in Brooklyn, we blended original historic details with the owner’s own spirited, worldly aesthetic.  The characteristics of the townhouse — large archways, exposed masonry walls, and rooms both grand and intimate — were carefully recomposed to reflect the heritage of the clients, borrowing from both their New Orleans and Tunisian roots.

Upon entering the vibrant blue entry vestibule, the parlor level of the home unfolds as large arched openings lead from the hallway to the spacious living room & kitchen.  An elongated archway separates the living & dining areas, a reinvention of the original arched wall separating the two. Upstairs, a series of rooms including an artist’s office, guest bedroom and prayer room eventually lead to a primary suite, where the acts of sleeping, bathing and dressing are interwoven with the same attention to detail & restoration.

The kitchen serves as a gathering space in the house.  The warm clay-toned walls are reflected in the painted cabinetry, which is highlighted by handmade Tunisian tile sourced by the owners.  The marble kitchen island is rounded on one end, an echo of the many arches throughout the home.  A set of tall double doors leads to the rear deck, allowing for al fresco dining overlooking the back garden.

The second level rooms take on different tones based on their function.  A bright, airy writing & painting room facing the street is juxtaposed by a warm and quieter guest bedroom facing the yard.  A guest bathroom reflects the same warmth using a natural zellige tile on both floor and wall.

An open bathroom connecting the primary bedroom and changing room serves as a sanctuary within the suite.  A freestanding tub is surrounded by curving two-toned plaster walls and a recessed arched niche. Opposite the bath there is a monolithic marble clad vanity.
